Earlier this year, a very passionate Debra Baida came to interview me about Goodwill’s environmental mission and about our creative use of space. Goodwill moved into the old Coca Cola building in the civic center of San Francisco after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. My department, eCommerce, is located in the basement level where the restroom, locker room and shower facilities used to be. We still have the urinals, sinks and even marble potty stalls.
I never thought about how we use space as something creative until Debra came. We simply don’t have enough room for anything so we use every nook and crany for storage. When running a business out of an old, dark, converted bathroom, the nooks are definitely better than the crannies.
Anyway, this is the neatest thing every written about something I do. Lot’s of people have asked what I do. When you read this article understand that four years ago, Goodwill did not have an eCommerce department or anything you read about in the article. That is what I’ve done and what I’ve tried to bring to Goodwill. It hasn’t been easy. Goodwill is nearly 100 years old, so I’m teaching a very old dog some new tricks about how to sell stuff.
A basement full of books « liberated spaces.
